U.S. Citizens Arrested in Venezuela After Riots Over Election

Caracas - Venezuelan authorities arrested a U.S. citizen who works as a film producer. 35-year-old man was accused of inciting the post-election unrest in the country.

"I have personally ordered the arrest of Timothy Tracy on suspicion of creating violence in the cities of this country," said Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as reported by Press TV, Friday (26/04/2013).

Tracy accused of funding the left-wing youth groups to hold demonstrations into riots after Maduro victory in the presidential election last week. According to Venezuela's Ministry of the Interior, U.S. men's work for U.S. intelligence.

Family and friends Tracy claimed he had been in Venezuela since 2012 last year, to make a documentary about the confrontation between the socialist government of Venezuela and the country's opposition. Previously, Tracy was twice detained by Venezuelan intelligence police, Sebin. The last time when he was detained five days before the Venezuelan presidential election on 14 April.

According to the Venezuelan prosecutor, Tracy was arrested on Wednesday, April 24 evening local time when going from Simon Bolivar International Airport in Caracas, capital of Venezuela. He will be charged in accordance Venezuela antiterrorism law.

Maduro Venezuela was declared the winner after the election earned 50.8 percent of the vote. While its rival, opposition leader Henrique Capriles, won 49 percent of the vote. Capriles Maduro refused to recognize the victory and called for a rally to protest the victory.

Maduro also accused the U.S. Embassy in Caracas to support demo incidents that marred the riots, which flare occurs after April 14 elections.
