Gems 4.4 Billion Year-Old Found in Australia

Wisconsin - the oldest gemstones that ever existed in the world was found buried in a pasture of sheep in Australia . Zircon crystal gemstone types is estimated at 4.4 billion years old . Wow !
Researchers in the United States using two different techniques to find out the age of this gemstone . These findings indicate that the surface layer of the Earth was formed soon after the planet formed . This little gem stone is part of the remnants of the earth's surface is formed first .

Similarly, as stated by the researchers in the journal Nature Geoscience and reported by the Sydney Morning Herald , Monday ( 24/02/2014 ) .

Professor of earth sciences at the University of Wisconsin , John Valley who led the study said , these findings suggest that the surface of the Earth at the beginning is not as hard as imagined by researchers over the years.

To determine the age of the zircon crystals , the researchers initially using dating techniques based on radioactive decay of uranium to obtain mineral samples . However, because some investigators concluded that this technique could be wrong because of the movement of atoms with crystals all the time , then later used the second method to make sure that the first technique .

These researchers used a technique known as atom - probe tomography are able to identify the atoms in the crystal and determine the mass number . As a result, it is certain that the zircon crystal gemstone 4.4 billion years old .

As a reflection of the age of the gemstone , can be seen from the time of formation of the earth , which is about 4.5 billion years ago from a ball of molten rock . This means , the newly formed layers of the earth's surface after it , or about 100 million years later . The age of these crystals also shows that the surface layer of the Earth , where there is a crystal in it , only appeared about 160 million years after the formation of the solar system .

The zircon crystals found in 2001 on a hill rocks at Jack Hills region , Australia , approximately 800 km from Perth . The crystal size is very very small . Results of a new study of this crystal was announced on Sunday ( 23/2 ) yesterday by the research team .

" Zircon can be large and very pretty . , But we studied are small and tend to be interesting except to geologists . If you hold it in the palm of the hand , you must have good eyesight to be able to see it without a magnifying glass , " explained Professor Valley .
